Disney's Cure For Hiraeth: Welsh Ladies in Disneyland Paris' "It's A Small World"

Finding a Piece of Wales in the Heart of Disneyland Paris

There is a special kind of magic that happens when you are miles away from home and suddenly spot something deeply familiar. On our recent family holiday to Disneyland Paris, we experienced that exact thing where we least expected it: inside "it’s a small world."

Our youngest is too small for most of the break-neck rollercoasters (though her older sibling is a real thrill seeker), and frankly her parents are starting to age out of rides like "Hyperspace Mountain" - which produces a genuine fear of a broken-neck, or at the very least some lasting back pain! As a result It's A Small World is becoming a family tradition when visiting Disney parks. Bright colours, maddeningly catchy song and cute dolls presenting a message of global inclusion.

"There's so much that we shareThat it's time we're awareIt's a small world after all"

As our boat drifted through the European section of the attraction, we found ourselves leaning forward, pointing in excitement. Nestled beautifully into the scenery were the iconic, unmistakable traditional Welsh Lady costumes.

Seeing the signature tall black hats (het gopa), the intricately patterned shawls, and the classic red cloaks beautifully rendered in the ride's whimsical, mid-century art style felt like a warm greeting from home right in the middle of France.

If you are planning a trip or simply love cultural trivia, here is the history behind the Welsh representation on this legendary ride -and exactly how to spot them on your next voyage.

Quick Facts: Wales in "it's a small world"

For those searching for the exact timeline of Welsh representation in the park, here are the historical data points:

  • Disneyland Paris Opening Day: April 12, 1992. Unlike the American counterparts, the Paris version of the ride debuted on the park's opening day with a unique architectural facade and a layout optimized entirely within a single, grand showroom.
  • Original Inclusion: The Welsh Lady costume dolls have been an integral part of the attraction’s European sequence since opening day in 1992. They were not a later addition.
  • Exclusive to Euro Disney: Our trio of Welsh dolls are a DisneyLand Paris exclusive. California, Florida, Japan Hong Kong and Shanghai are missing out!
  • The Design Legacy: The costumes were originally conceptualised under the influence of legendary Imagineer Alice Davis (who designed the original global costumes for the 1964 World's Fair), ensuring traditional garments met Disney’s strict aesthetic guidelines for global unity.
  • Recent Restorations: The ride underwent a massive, historic restoration concluding in May 2023, followed by a targeted, highly detailed costume preservation project in early 2025 by Les Ateliers Couture (the Disneyland Paris costuming team) to faithfully recreate and protect the original 1992 fabrics.

The Cultural Significance of the Welsh Costumes

What makes the Disneyland Paris version of "it's a small world" so special is how it handles Western Europe. Because the theme park is based in France, the Walt Disney Imagineering teams gave much deeper, localized attention to the distinct regions and cultures of the United Kingdom and its neighbors than you will find in the California or Florida versions.

The inclusion of the Welsh Lady costume is highly deliberate. Rather than generalizing "British" culture with a single uniform style, the ride distinctly honors Welsh identity.

The dolls wear the traditional 19th-century attire that became a powerful symbol of Welsh national identity during the standardisation of Welsh folklore. Seeing the distinct silhouette of the het gopa (the tall hat) sitting alongside cultures from every corner of the globe is a wonderful nod to our heritage on a massive, international stage.

Where to Spot the Welsh Dolls (Our Photos)

When you take the "happiest cruise that ever sailed" at Disneyland Paris, keep your camera ready as you transition into the European pavilion.

The Welsh representation is brilliantly placed, capturing that classic Mary Blair-inspired whimsical geometry. The rich reds of the cloaks and the clean lines of the tall hats make them stand out beautifully against the pastel backgrounds.

There is a crescent moon above London Bridge and Westminster tower and it is here that our trio of Welsh ladies sit - some might say - righfully so! 😜

A Must-See for Welsh Disney Fans

For a small nation, seeing our traditional dress celebrated so faithfully by Disney Imagineers is incredibly moving. It turns a classic theme park ride into a scavenger hunt of cultural pride.

If you are heading to Marne-la-Vallée anytime soon, make sure "it’s a small world" is at the very top of your itinerary. Keep your eyes peeled during the European sequence - it’s a moment of pure Welsh pride wrapped up in timeless Disney magic.

Just don't blame us if you find yourself singing the song for weeks afterwards!
