Hollywood Goes Welsh: ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and Our Favourite Welsh Girls' Name Seren

If you’ve been keeping an eye on the latest movie news, your jaw might have dropped just like ours did. Warner Bros. recently announced a brand-new Lord of the Rings film The Hunt for Gollum (directed by Andy Serkis).

But the biggest news for us here in Wales? Hollywood superstar Anya Taylor-Joy has been cast as a lethal, high-ranking Elf assassin. And her character’s name?

Seren!

Yes, you read that right! One of Wales' most beloved, traditional names is officially heading to Middle-earth.

What Does 'Seren' Mean?

For our friends outside of Wales, Seren (pronounced SEH-ren) is a beautifully simple Welsh word. It literally translates to "Star."

It has been a top-tier favourite for baby girls in Wales for decades, carrying an air of magic, brightness, and natural beauty. Now, it’s about to be printed on movie posters from Cardiff to California.

Why a Welsh Name Fits Perfectly in Middle-earth

While some hardcore fantasy fans were surprised to see a modern Welsh name used for an original movie character, J.R.R. Tolkien himself would likely have given it a massive thumbs-up.

Tolkien had a profound, lifelong love affair with the Welsh language. He famously based Sindarin, the primary language spoken by the Elves in Middle-earth, directly on the sounds, grammar, and patterns of Welsh. Tolkien once wrote:

"Welsh is of this soil, this island, the senior language of the men of Britain; and Welsh is beautiful."

So, giving a Sindar Elf (the "Grey Elves" of the Woodland Realm) a pure Welsh name like Seren isn’t just a random Hollywood choice, it’s a beautiful full-circle moment honouring the very roots of Elvish history!

Who is Seren the Elf?

While the plot is being kept under lock and key, here is what we know about Anya Taylor-Joy’s character so far:

  • The Role: A trusted, "lethal agent" serving the Elven King Thranduil (played by Lee Pace)
  • The Vibe: An outrider or assassin patrolling the deep, shadowed forests of Mirkwood
  • The Connection: In Tolkien's wider lore, Aragorn eventually captures Gollum and leaves him in the custody of the Mirkwood Elves. It’s highly likely our girl Seren will be the one tasked with guardin - and potentially tracking down - the world's most famous cave gremlin
