About the Collector: Robert Griffith
Behind this beautiful volume stands Robert Griffith, a passionate collector and preserver of Welsh traditional music. Little is known about Griffith’s personal life, but his work speaks clearly: he was deeply committed to safeguarding the melodies that shaped Welsh identity.
Griffith dedicated himself to gathering and arranging traditional tunes — pieces often passed down orally and played at local gatherings, chapel socials, family homes, and early Eisteddfodau. By collecting and arranging these melodies, he ensured they would not be lost to time.
His collection, Y Delyn Gymreig, remains a valuable cultural bridge, connecting modern readers and musicians with the sounds of Wales’ past. Each melody is part of a wider story — one of community, memory, and the harp’s enduring place at the heart of Welsh culture.
While many Welsh collectors of the era focused on choral or vocal works, Griffith’s dedication to the harp makes his contribution particularly meaningful. His work continues to inspire musicians, historians, collectors, and those who feel a deep connection to Wales’ musical soul.
