Monk's Loving Cup - Caldey Island Pottery - Vintage (Preloved)

Very rare double handled cup with the Caldey Abbey symbol consisting of a fish and a cross. This may have been made by the monks of the Abbey there as a souvenir for tourists or for their own use

Caldey Island (Ynys Bŷr in Welsh) is a small, peaceful island just under a mile from the coast of Tenby in Pembrokeshire. With over 1,500 years of recorded history, it is considered one of Britain’s holy islands. Many ancient Celtic traditions are still upheld today by the Cistercian monks of Caldey Abbey, who own and care for the island.

Around 40 people live on Caldey Island permanently, along with a community of Cistercian (Trappist) monks whose numbers vary throughout the year.

A loving cup is a traditional shared cup used by monks during feasts or communal gatherings. It symbolises hospitality, unity, and shared brotherhood within a monastic community.

• Lovely glazed earthenware in a rustic and shiny conker brown
• No maker's mark at the bottom
• Approximate measurements: 12.5cm cup diameter, 17cm including handles, 5.5cm height

Condition: very good / good.

All cups have some crazing to the glaze. Some scuff marks to base. One has a tiny chip in the varnish on the rim, which has been priced accordingly (see last photo)
