Stoneware Bottle / Flagon - Horrocks & Sons Merthyr - Botanical Brewery Antique 1924 (Preloved)

Very rare advertising bottle / flagon advertising Horrocks & Sons Botanical Brewery, Ynysgau Street, Merthyr, 1924.

Salt-glazed stoneware bottles were a mainstay of the British drinks trade from the Victorian era through to the mid-20th century. Tough and endlessly reusable, they were used by grocers, chemists, and breweries to store everything from mineral water and beer to herbal extracts. Many carried stamped or printed adverts, and these characterful pieces are now highly sought after by collectors.

Around the shoulder, a legal notice appears in bold block lettering: “THIS JAR IS THE PROPERTY OF HORROCKS & SONS – ANYONE BUYING, SELLING OR MISUSING SAME WILL BE PROSECUTED” On the reverse shoulder is a sharp impressed maker’s mark reading “PRICE BRISTOL.”

• Beautiful heavy and high quality stoneware
• No maker's mark at the bottom

Condition: very good

Partial print loss, some age related marks and a thumb print sized indent but not a crack / chip - seems to have been made during the manufacturer. Ink smudged in places. There are some scuffs to the glaze and little raised parts of the pottery. The bottle remains structurally sound and displays beautifully
