The love story of Will Hopkin and Ann Thomas ('The Maid of Cefn Ydfa') has been part of the folk history of Glamorganshire for the last two centuries. It dates back to the early Eighteenth Century; Will Hopkin himself was born in Llangynwyd, a village near Maesteg, in 1700.
It is the Romantic story of the village lad employed as a thatcher who falls in love with the local squire's daughter. Despite the fact that his love was reciprocated, the social distinctions of that time brought violent opposition to their love.
Will Hopkin was also a bard, and wrote the words of the folk-song 'Bugeilio'r Gwenith Gwyn', ('Gathering the Wheat') in memory of Ann Thomas.
It has been the inspiration for a number of songs and tales. This version, begun in 1873 by Isaac Craigfryn Hughes, has remained the most popular. The book passed through many editions in the 1920's and 1930's. This edition has been republished as a result of requests from librarians and the general public.
