This book is a fascinating window into the social and religious life of early 20th-century Wales. Efail y Gof (which translates to "The Blacksmith’s Forge") was written by the Reverend D. Oliver Edwards (1837–1908), a prominent Baptist minister. His writings were originally a column in Seren Cymru.

It is written as dialogues (ymddyddanion) between different characters. This style was specifically designed to be performed or read aloud at Eisteddfodau, Temperance meetings, or Sunday School gatherings.
