A very rare novel about John Francis the First, the last of the paternal and dictatorial colliery-owners in the South Wales coalfield.
He risked a fortune sinking two pits and eventually struck rich seams of coal. The pits gave birth to the township which he named John's Town after himself, and those who lived and worked there he called "my people". He built himself a mansion overlooking his town and, when old age and blindness overtook him, he still went to work at his colliery. This character is a complete picture of a great man and his mining township.
