Hirnos Gauaf (Winter's Long Night), subtitled Hanesion, Straeon, Chwedlau a Barddoniaeth (Histories, Stories, Legends, and Poetry), was published in 1899 by T. M. Evans. It is a quintessential piece of late-Victorian Welsh "fireside literature."
True to its title, this book was designed to be the perfect companion for the long, dark winter nights in a Welsh farmhouse. It is a rich anthology of Welsh folklore and culture, compiled to entertain and educate the family circle. A vibrant mix of traditional Welsh ghost stories, local histories, moral fables, and light-hearted poetry.
- Welsh Church Press and Printing Company Lampeter - 1899
- Welsh language
- Bound in an unassuming brown and blue. Perhaps rebound in mid century by an individual or a very small local bindery due to the handwritten title
- Hardback, 169 pages
We are proud to offer this book from a notable local collection. Formerly held in the library of a Cynon Valley minister, it represents decades of dedicated collecting of Welsh literature.
Thomas Morgan Evans was an educator and a dedicated "man of letters." He understood that to keep the Welsh language alive, it had to be fun to read. Hirnos Gauaf was his contribution to making sure Welsh literature wasn't just found in the chapel, but also in the home.
Condition: very good: Cover has age related marks and a little scuffed. Title on spine has faded / rubbed off. Inside excellent save for foxing on first couple pages and previous owner's name (in beautiful handwriting)
