Written in Middle Welsh, the text is a translation of a lost or original Latin biography, [Vita Griffini Filii Conani], composed during the lifetime of his son and successor, Owain Gwynedd.

Details Gruffydd's birth in exile in Ireland, his Scandinavian-Irish alliances, campaigns against Norman lords (like Robert of Rhuddlan and Hugh of Shrewsbury), and his eventual stabilization of Gwynedd.
