Between the mid-nineteenth century and the First World War, and especially towards the end of that period, the population of the two Rhondda valleys in the heart of the South Wales coalfield expanded faster than that of any comparable area in Britain, as thousands of men came to work in the mines. A string of new villages grew up in both valleys, which had previously been a thinly populated farming community. Thousands of new houses were put up in a very short time, together with pubs, schools, chapels and other buildings.

Who built all these houses? Who decided where they were to be built? How much did it cost? What return did the builders see on their capital? How did the terraces so characteristic of the South Wales coalfield evolve? How did the internal layout of the houses differ between different streets and different communities?
