August 22nd 1985, a date which marks the quincentenary of Bosworth Field, will be a reminder of one of the most significant events in the history of Britain, only equalled in the military sense by the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The momentous outcome of both decisive battles was the establishment of a new dynasty.

The author's initial interest was kindled by a number of visits to Bosworth Field, and this experience in turn led to a study of the battle and its preliminaries by several English authors, including the comprehensive account in Hutton's volume Battle of Bosworth Field (1813). It became abundantly evident that the contribution of Wales and Welshmen to the Tudor cause has not been correctly evaluated or adequately presented by historians in England - with the notable exception of G.M. Trevelyan.

An attempt at enlightenment, even by an amateur historian, appears justifiable, especially as the forthcoming quincentenary will lead to heightened interest in the Bosworth story on both sides of the border. Bosworth Field - A Welsh Retrospect is the measure of the author's concern for the preservation of historical balance. It is simply an effort to repair an unfortunate and persistent historiographical hiatus.
