Marian Thomas, the petted child of devoted parents, cannot fit in anywhere. Unfulfilled, impervious even, she returns to her Welsh home and there seeks to find a new way of life. She falls in love with a man who is encircled by the too-close relationship with his mother which has already destroyed his marriage.

At the same time Marian is pursued by a young man who, by all reasonable standards, should suit her, but because she is wrapped up in her unhappy love, she pushes him away. These young people, the late developers, the delayed adolescents, try to break through to one another, but are baffled by the concentric defensive circles which create the separate towers in which they live.

The interplay of these three is enacted against the gentle background of the Welsh hills - a place with more than a hint of Arcadia.

This is a book about good people, who are cruel from a sense of loss or over-possessiveness and, at the end, as the travellers get their last glimpse of Eden, no one should be blamed.
