Winner of the National Eisteddfod Prose Medal in 1935, Traed mewn Cyffion (Feet in Chains) is widely considered Kate Roberts’s masterpiece. Despite its brevity, the novel provides a profound social history of north-west Wales between 1880 and 1917, tracing three generations of a family as they navigate the decline of a monoglot, Nonconformist culture.

The narrative culminates in the devastating impact of the First World War—most poignantly captured in the scene where Jane Gruffydd receives her son's death notice but cannot read it because it is written in English.
