Wales and Her Language: considered from a historical, educational and social standpoint with remarks on modern Welsh Literature and a Linguistic Map of the Country

This work is a famous historical text on the status and sociology of the Welsh language, known particularly for including early detailed linguistic maps of Wales.

  • Printed by J. E. Southall in Newport and E. Hicks Jun. in London (no date but research indictated it was 1892 - first edition)
  • Was once part of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth (now Aberystwyth University) library collection, having been donated by Thomas Francis Robert family after his death in 1920.
  • English language
  • Includes Foldout colour linguistic map - three colours showing areas where there are no native Welsh speakers
  • Front reads "Cymru Gymry a Chymraeg" (A Welsh Wales for the Welsh) and "Gwell Pwyll nag Aur" (Wisdom is better than gold) surrounding a leek
  • Hardback, olive green boards, 396 pages

Condition: Fair: front cover and the first page has come away, but the rest of the book feels sturdy. Age related marks and spine is a little tattered. Map has tears and has been cello-taped in places - still very charming
