Welsh Country Upbringing - D. Parry-Jones 1976 (Preloved)

The author has made an invaluable contribution by writing this book-recording for posterity a beautiful description of life in a rural agricultural community at the beginning of the century. He tells how farmworkers would stop at the sound of a horn, to realise it was Old Doctor Davies on his rounds in the neighbourhood. He blew his horn at intervals so that those who had sickness in the family could cut across the fields to meet him.

We read of the hay harvest which was an informal communal effort by groups of local farmers. Scything was done very early in the morning, often starting at 2 a.m., by a row of at least nine or ten scythers.

The author's flowing pen gives us glimpses of a wide spectrum of rural life - New Year's Day and other festivals, funerals, the harvest, schooldays and college life, the church, market day, and a host of other events and other activities.

D. Parry-Jones was a well known Welsh author who focused on traditional Welsh country life, folklore, and customs.
